SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES (SES) OPTION

What are supplemental educational services?

  • Free tutoring and extra help with school work in subjects such as reading and math
  • Instruction must take place outside the regular school day
  • Offered by State-approved private providers

Who are the providers?

When is a child eligible for SES?

  • A child is eligible for services if he/she attends a Title I school that has been identified as Year Two or more of "in need of improvement" and has free or reduced-price meals. However, for the 2008-2009 school year, the United States Department of Education approved the Florida’s Differentiated Accountability Pilot Program, which expands the eligibility criteria to require school districts to offer SES to all eligible students in Title I schools that failed to make AYP for two consecutive years.

Who pays?

  • School districts pay State-Approved Providers and facilitate parent/provider contracts. The 2008-2009 per pupil allocation for Miami-Dade is $1424.

Where are services located and will transportation be provided?

  • Services may be provided in a student’s school or at another location
  • School districts are not required to provide transportation for eligible students to and from service providers

Where will I find information on the providers?

  • For the list of State-Approved providers for 2008-09 click here. This list will be mailed to parents of all eligible students and will be available at eligible SES schools.
  • NCLB Parental Choice Information Fairs are held in the Fall of 2008 to give parents the opportunity to meet State-Approved Providers click here.  Information regarding the times and places of the Fairs for 2008-2009 school year will be sent to the homes of eligible students.

What should I ask the providers?

  • In order to help parents make the choice that best meets the needs of their child, suggested questions to ask SES providers have been developed by the District. To view the questions to ask the provider click here.

What do I need to do to enroll my child for SES?

  • Complete the SES enrollment form (2008-2009 Enrollment Form will be available August 18, 2008), if your child attends a school that has been identified as "in need of improvement" and has free or reduced-price meals during the 2008-2009 school year. Enrollment period for 2008-2009 is August 18-September 8.
  • When completing the enrollment form, parents must select three providers in order of preference.  Every attempt will be made to place the student with the provider selected.  In the event none of the selections are available, the student will be assigned to an alternate provider from the list of state-approved providers.
  • For a SES enrollment form to be valid it must be completed and signed by the parent or guardian and submitted to the appropriate M-DCPS staff.
  • Forms may be submitted to your child's school, at any information fair, online, or faxed to 305-995-2540.
